Driving in Curaçao: What You Need to Know

1. Traffic regulations are slightly different

On Curaçao, we drive on the right, just like in the Netherlands and Belgium. The traffic signs are largely the same. However, there are a few important differences:

Right of way at intersections

On unpaved or equivalent roads, the rule is ‘no right of way’. In practice, the driver on the main road usually has right of way, even if they are coming from the left.
Tip: always look carefully and do not take right of way if you are not sure you will get it. Drivers here on the island are often very patient and give each other right of way when necessary.

Roundabouts

Here too, things are slightly different: traffic on the roundabout does not have right of way at many roundabouts, unless otherwise indicated.
Look carefully at the signs and be alert when entering a roundabout.

2. What is the traffic like in Curaçao?

In a word? Relaxed.
The average speed is low (often 40-60 km/h), and yes, unfortunately, we cannot escape traffic jams here either.

Merging and giving way
Many people suddenly stop to let someone merge or pull in. It’s a nice gesture, but you still need to pay attention.

Stray dogs and animals on the road
Especially in quiet neighborhoods or in the evening. Drive extra carefully in these areas.

Cars without turn signals
Sometimes drivers indicate their intentions late, or often not at all. So keep your distance and anticipate.

3. Parking on Curaçao

Good news: parking is usually easy and free. However, in the centre of Willemstad (Punda & Otrobanda), paid parking is required via a machine or app.

Look out for blue kerb markings or signs.
If you see them, you have to pay. Rates are usually around ANG 1 per hour.

Tip: always park your car in a well-lit spot and do not leave any valuables visible.

4. Damage or accident?

Always call Forensys first, even in the case of minor collisions. It is important not to touch or move the car. For a proper insurance report, Forensys must take photographs of the exact accident scene.

Don’t let yourself be rushed. Are you being overtaken? Fine. Drive calmly and stay alert! That’s how driving works on Curaçao.

Take it easy when driving in the dark. There is little street lighting outside the city. Plan your evening trips wisely or take a torch with you if you are on foot.
